Turning Cash Into Something Real
I was recently reminded of a simple but powerful idea from investor Grant Cardone:
"The way to make sure you don’t burn cash is to convert it to real assets."
It is a message that resonates here in New Zealand. We all know how quickly money can lose value. Groceries, fuel and housing costs climb year after year, and the cash sitting in your bank account does not stretch as far as it once did.
A Familiar Story
We often see clients who have worked hard to build up a healthy cash reserve. At first it feels safe, like a cushion against uncertainty. But over time, inflation quietly chips away at its value. What felt like a solid foundation five years ago suddenly does not go as far today.
That is when the conversation turns to real assets.
What Do We Mean by Real Assets?
Here in Aotearoa, the most common examples are:
- Property - A family home, a rental or a commercial building. Property has long been a trusted way to store and grow wealth.
- Shares - Investing in local companies, or through managed funds, gives you a stake in businesses that can deliver growth over time.
- Your Own Business - Putting capital back into your enterprise can create value well beyond what cash interest provides.
These assets are tangible. They often generate income and can grow in value.

The way to make sure you don’t burn cash is to convert it to real assets.

Why This Matters
The goal is not to rush out and buy whatever you can. It is about recognising that holding too much cash has its risks. By steadily converting some of that cash into assets that last, you give yourself stability and potential for growth.
Think of it this way: cash is like water sitting in a bucket. Over time it evaporates. Real assets are like planting a tree. They grow, provide shade and in many cases produce fruit.
Taking the Next Step
If you are wondering how to start, it does not need to be complicated. Begin by:
- Looking at how much cash you actually need for the short term.
- Thinking about your long-term goals such as security, growth or income.
- Talking with someone who understands the New Zealand landscape and can help match your situation with the right opportunities.
I’m Mark. At Hallam Jones, we help Kiwis make these decisions with confidence. At the end of the day, it is not about chasing the latest trend. It is about turning your hard-earned cash into something real, something that lasts, and something that works for you.
